Location: Plainfield, IL

Travel: Project-based (as needed) / approx. 50%

Position Overview

This role is ideal for engineers with approximately 2–5 years of experience in automation, electrical engineering, or mechatronics who are looking to grow into commissioning and system-level troubleshooting. This role focuses on hands-on work with industrial machinery and production equipment — not software or IT environments.

You will work hands-on with highly specialized industrial equipment, supporting machine start-up, analyzing system behavior, and resolving technical issues in real production environments.

This is not a pure PLC programming role and not a reactive service position. Instead, it focuses on commissioning, structured troubleshooting, and understanding machines end-to-end — combining electrical expertise with mechanical awareness.

About the Company

probeam is a global leader in electron beam technology, delivering advanced welding and additive manufacturing solutions for the most demanding industrial and research applications for over 50 years. Its systems are trusted in industries where precision and reliability matter most — such as aerospace, defense, automotive, and energy.

The US subsidiary in Plainfield, IL, serves as a central hub for commissioning, service, training, and customer support across North America. The US team operates within a global matrix organization and works closely with engineering, project management, and development teams based in Germany.

About the Role

As pro-beam continues to expand its installed base in North America, the US organization is strengthening its hands-on technical capabilities in commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer-facing system support.

The role focuses on commissioning, system-level troubleshooting, and technical support of custom-built industrial welding and production systems.

Engineers in this role work closely with customers, US-based operations, and international engineering teams to analyze machine behavior, perform machine-level and system-level troubleshooting in industrial environments, and ensure reliable system performance in real production settings.

The position offers a balanced mix of planned commissioning projects, technical problem-solving, and customer interaction, making it ideal for engineers who enjoy understanding machines end-to-end rather than focusing solely on software development or reactive service work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support machine commissioning and start-up, both internally and at customer sites
  • Troubleshoot automation issues during commissioning and in service cases
  • Support targeted PLC adjustments as needed (Siemens / TIA Portal preferred; other PLC platforms considered)

  • Support customer training on different levels, from operators to advanced users
  • Act as a technical interface between customers, engineering, manufacturing, and service teams
  • Contribute to technical documentation and support during proposal and quoting phases
  • Support automation-related improvements throughout the machine lifecycle

What pro-beam is Looking For

  • Hands-on PLC experience required; Siemens TIA Portal strongly preferred
  • Basic to intermediate familiarity with HMI systems and visualization
  • Basic mechanical understanding (e.g., assemblies, motion systems, or machine components) for troubleshooting and system-level analysis
  • Practical experience with industrial automation environments
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and interest in machine start-up and optimization
  • Willingness to travel for customer projects and commissioning assignments (project-based)
  • Customer-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in interdisciplinary teams
