The German International School Washington D.C. is a leading international school in the Washington DC metro area. For 60 years, GISW has been teaching children from preschool through twelfth grade. Aside from being the first MINT-EC school in the USA, GISW offers a U.S. High School Diploma as well as a German International Abitur (DIA) to its students. The German International School Washington D.C. is seeking an Assistant Business Director for its bilingual Preschool to 12th grade school located in Potomac, MD. This position reports to the Business Director (BD).

The Assistant Business Director will manage certain non-pedagogical school operations and provide high quality customer service to all stakeholders. Competencies will include fundraising, alumni relations, general business management, school relations and communication, and compliance and personnel management. This position is full-time and exempt.

  • Oversee and coordinate the efforts of Admissions, Advancement, and Media/Communications with special focus on external outreach
  • Support Board and school goals especially with respect to Fundraising, Alumni Relations, and Admissions generation (using Blackbaud programs)
  • Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with potential public and private partners in coordination with the BD
  • Work closely with the Advancement Director, the Communications Director and the Director of Enrollment Management to develop and implement a strategic plan to attract new students and retain current students
  • Provide excellent customer service to parents and students
  • Assist in ensuring operational integrity including process improvement, compliance with all applicable US and German laws/regulations, regulatory reporting, and contractual obligations
  • Work with the BD and Director of Finance to ensure the fiscal health of the School for effective operation and long-term sustainability
  • Establish and implement administrative policies and procedures; draft and maintain the employee handbook
  • Assist in the retention of a high quality, motivated, and diverse administrative team
  • Conduct regular planning and operations review meetings with administration staff
  • Represent BD when BD is absent
  • Assist in managing other daily operations of GISW as assigned by the BD
  • Propose any needed changes in organization, job descriptions and budget to the BD
  • Participate in professional development as assigned by BD
  • Additional duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • At least five (5) years of management experience including leading a team of professionals
  • Experience in change management and managing small teams
  • Understanding of rules and regulations applicable to independent US schools
  • Proven ability to develop meaningful relationships with diverse stakeholders in a multicultural environment, as well as managing and resolving conflicts
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in German highly preferred, if no German language skills – able and willing to study German at our German Language School or at another institution
